Leveraging the Power of the Cloud - Azure GPUs

Welcome to the first installment of our on-going series Leveraging the Power of the Cloud.  In today's competitive business landscape where every advantage helps, the cloud is providing an unprecedented level of technology democratization.  The cloud is extended access to cutting edge technology, leveling the playing field for smaller organizations and making it possible to compete with much larger contenders.  Over the course of this series we will highlight a variety of ways the cloud can enable your company to achieve more.

The use of graphic-intensive applications typically requires both robust clients and servers.  So power users and designers in the world of 3D graphic design and imaging rarely tune in when there is talk about working from anywhere using a tablet or smartphone.  This type of scenario has always been associated with the risk of performance hiccups - that is until now.

NVIDIA has announced that Microsoft will offer NVIDIA® GPU-enabled professional graphics applications and accelerated computing capabilities to customers worldwide through Microsoft Azure.

  • Azure shall be extended with the addition of N-series GPU-enabled virtual machines available over a fast RDMA network.  Through its deployment of the latest version of NVIDIA GRID™ in this new N-Series virtual machine offering, Azure is the first cloud computing platform to provide NVIDIA GRID 2.0 virtualized graphics for enterprise customers.
  • Businesses will then have the ability to deploy NVIDIA Quadro®-grade professional graphics applications and accelerated computing in the cloud through Azure
  • Through this GPU-backed N-series, Azure will also offer customers supercomputing-class performance, with the addition of the NVIDIA Tesla® Accelerated Computing Platform's flagship Tesla K80 GPU accelerators, for the most computationally demanding data center and high performance computing (HPC) applications.

With this combination of Azure and NVIDIA technologies, the responsibility of high performance computing can be redirected away from local clients and services and the rendering and delivery of resulting graphics accelerated.
