Participants review and update their knowledge of punctuation and grammar rules and of clear writing strategies so that documents they edit are mechanically correct and flawlessly professional. Examples and exercises provide hands-on practice. Participants are invited to send samples of their on-the-job writing for confidential feedback and receive The Writing Center's manual, A Desk Guide to Business Writing.

Intended Audience


At Completion

Participants learn how to:

  • Recognize and correct common punctuation errors (for example, using a comma unnecessarily or instead of a semicolon or colon).
  • Use spelling checkers effectively.  Follow conventions for plurals, possessives, capitalization and numbers.
  • Remember the difference between commonly confused words such as affect and effect.
  • Recognize and correct such common grammar errors as lack of subject-verb agreement and faulty pronoun use (for example, using I, me, and myself incorrectly).
  • Recognize and correct such sentence structure errors as fragments, run-on sentences and lack of parallel structure.
  • Recognize and correct wordiness, ensure specific wording, and improve tone.
  • Use eight proofreading tips to ensure error-free documents.  Use computer editing functions.

The Writing Center’s manual, A Desk Guide to Business Grammar, handouts including Feedback Questionnaires and other materials enhance the learning experience.  A list of essential style guides and other editing references.

Course Outline

  1. When is a comma used with "and"? What is the difference between a comma, semicolon, and colon? When are hyphens used? Answer those questions and more as you review and practice essential punctuation rules.
  2. What is the difference between "affect" and "effect"? "That" and "Which"? Gain writing confidence as you review spelling tips and current standards for commonly misused/confused words.
  3. When should "east," "west," "south," and "north" be capitalized? When should numbers be written as words? Review and practice current conventions for capitalization and numbers.
  4. What is the correct use of I/me and who/whom? What is the best way to correct sentence fragments and run-on sentences? Review and practice essential grammar and sentence structure rules.
  5. How do you increase clarity in sentences? Review and practice five steps for eliminating wordiness.
  6. How do you increase documents' credibility and professionalism? Review and practice applying eight proofreading tips and an Editing
    Checklist to ensure error-free documents.
