Overview

In this highly structured, yet lively and interactive Effective Presentations seminar, participants increase their oral communication competence and confidence as they review and practice strategies for producing clear, well-organized, audience-appropriate presentations.

Topics include how to

  1. Plan a presentation
  2. Analyze the audience
  3. Build presentations logically and persuasively
  4. Use visual aids effectively
  5. Improve delivery effectiveness
  6. Handle questions effectively

Intended Audience

This class is for professionals who want to increase their ability to speak in front of others effectively.

At Completion

At course completion, participants will be able to:

  • Apply a process to define the purpose and goal as well as analyze the audience for oral presentations.
  • Present effectively to management, technical, lay and mixed audiences with varying levels of technical expertise and experience as well as varying perspectives and concerns.
  • Begin and end effectively.
  • Reuse presentation templates. Considering whether an audience is apt to agree or needs to be persuaded, select a logical, strategic presentation pattern (for example, order of importance or reverse order of importance).
  • Select content at an appropriate level of detail for the audience, context, and allotted time. Use devices such as Zero Drafts, Storyboards, and Microsoft Word's Outline feature to quickly generate and organize content. Import Outline content to PowerPoint.
  • Layer presentations effectively (for example, create speaker notes, back-up slides in anticipation of audience questions requiring greater detail, audience note pages, and other handouts).
  • Select meaningful graphics to complement the text. Avoid common slide design errors.
  • Guide and orient the audience with predictive, transitional phrases to introduce content and graphics.
  • Apply a checklist to help ensure sufficient preparation. Apply tips for clear, effective presentation (for example, to make eye contact with the entire audience and not to read from slides). Build upon presentation strengths.
  • Prepare for confident extemporaneous speaking (for example, to succinctly and clearly answer questions during a presentation or ask/answer questions during a high-level meeting).
